Why is food waste important?

Food waste is a big problem, and America is estimated to waste roughly 40% of its food. A large portion of that food is considered edible, making the issue even worse. Food waste not only impacts the environment by using valuable resources, but it is lost in vain when 12% of households in America are food insecure. The food recovery hierarchy shows that source reduction should always be the focus of food waste efforts, followed by the next best methods for food rescue.
