About This Site
This website is a product of a 2020-2021 CalRecycle Grant aimed at helping our Humboldt County communities reduce food waste.
This site contains resources for how to reduce food waste in your home or business. It also includes food waste reduction data from our partners and media tools to share information about how to reduce waste.
About Us
The City of Arcata, City of Eureka, Food for People, and Cal Poly Humboldt Oh SNAP! combined efforts to reduce food waste in our community and to Feed People Not Landfills. This website will continue to evolve past the grant expiration as we continuously learn how to best educate and serve our community in terms of food waste.
If you have any questions, please reach out to whatever agency best represents you. For example, if you are a city of Eureka resident feel free to contact the City of Eureka. If you are a Cal Poly Humboldt student feel free to contact Oh SNAP!, etc.
City of Arcata:
The City of Arcata aims to work alongside community members, as well as provide them with the resources to continuously lessen food waste. Preventing food waste at the source, coupled with rescuing excess food before it goes bad is important to the progress we make towards a zero waste community. Reducing waste helps lessen our environmental footprint and ensures that resources are ending up in the hands of those who are in need.
City of Eureka:
The City of Eureka is working towards ambitious waste reduction goals. As a community, we can work together to greatly reduce waste and our impact on the environment. Reducing the amount of food going to the landfill is one of the most meaningful and easy ways we can help contribute positive environmental change in our community.
Food for People:
Food for People, the Food Bank for Humboldt County, works to alleviate local hunger and improve the health of the community through its 18 programs and strong community partnerships. These programs include a countywide network of emergency food pantries; food distributions for children, seniors, and homebound individuals; nutrition education and outreach; and local food recovery and gleaning efforts. Food for People distributes nearly 2 million pounds of food annually to the county’s most vulnerable members, and diverts nearly a quarter million pounds of food from landfills each year.
Food for People is here for the community during the COVID-19 crisis. Many are suffering in our community with the call for self-isolation - from families staying home with kids, to seniors unable to leave the home, or those experiencing lost wages or revenues. To find the food distribution closest to you go to www.foodforpeople.org.
Cal Poly Humboldt
Cal Poly Humboldt’s Oh SNAP! Student Food Programs is a student-driven initiative. Our mission is to increase access to nutritious and culturally appropriate food for all Cal Poly Humboldt students by engaging in campus and community partnerships and by raising awareness of food insecurity among our peers.
We aim to provide our fellow students with basic necessities and connections to community resources. Our services currently include a campus food pantry, a weekly stand with free fresh fruits and vegetables (during the growing season), CalFresh application assistance, connections to other local food resources, and outreach events.
We provide CalFresh assistance to anyone who needs it, however our pantry and food redistribution services are for matriculated Cal Poly Humboldt students only. If you have questions about this please go to our website here.
Feed People Not Landfills is a significant step to changing our relationship to food waste.
We want every person, business, and neighborhood to have the tools, knowledge, and skills to make an impact in reducing food waste.
